Adrian Pearsall 'Platform Gondola' Sofa in Walnut and Red Upholstery
Tearsheet
Adrian Pearsall for Craft Associates, ‘Platform Gondola’ sofa, fabric, walnut, wood, United States, 1960s
A wonderful sofa that features the combination of two great sofa models by Adrian Pearsall; the Gondola sofa and the Platform sofa. The frame consists of a walnut top and black base, creating the illusion to float. The gondola shaped seat enhances the floating appearance which makes this an almost poetic design. Adrian Pearsall was more often inspired by boats for his designs, which makes it no surprise that he pursued a career in yachts after he left the design world in the 1970s.
Adrian Pearsall (1925-2011), trained as an architectural engineer, was a sailor and interior designer. In 1952, Pearsall opened his own furniture company 'Craft Associates'. Pearsall designed some of the most sensuous, gracious midcentury design pieces around, sharing many of the design aesthetics by Vladimir Kagan. Key figure in the Atomic style, his pieces are characterized by flamboyant curves, upswept shapes and stretched proportions.
Please note that we advise reupholstery before use. This can be done before shipping by our experienced craftsmen and -women in our own in-house restoration atelier. Of course, a locally organized reupholstery is possible as well.
