Gagglioli, dining table, Alpi wood veneer, brass, dark brown smoked glass, Rome, Italy, 1970s

A strikingly postmodern and angular design, characterized by its bold geometric forms and extraordinary use of materials. The table’s base presents itself not as a support structure, but as a sculptural statement – bold, geometric, and unapologetically architectural. At first glance, it resembles an abstracted form of origami, executed not in paper but in dense, richly grained wood. The design hinges on a zig-zagging form, somewhere between a lightning bolt and a deconstructed Z, giving it an almost kinetic sense of movement, even while firmly grounded. This zig-zag is composed of a sequence of intersecting volumes: crisp-edged, faceted blocks that seem to lock into one another like puzzle pieces. There’s a careful contrast in the Alpi veneered wood grain – some segments are smooth and linear, while others swirl in intricate patterns. A central golden stripe slices through the form, catching the light and pulling the eye vertically through the mass.
