Marc van Rampelberg Freestanding Desk in Solid Iroko

Sale price$26,400.00

Marc van Rampelberg, freestanding writing desk, iroko, Kenya, 1980s.

This solid Iroko freestanding desk is manufactured in Kenya and designed by the Belgian designer Marc van Rampelberg. After traveling around Africa for many years, Van Rampelberg settled in Kenya where he started to work as a furniture designer. The defining aspect of his style can be described as the desire to create 'oneness'. Therefore, his designs give the impression to be executed out of one single mould. This remarkable desk with its organic forms certainly has that appearance. On both sides, this desk is furnished with three drawers, whereby the upper left drawer contains multiple smaller compartments to store personal belongings. Contrary to its overall sturdy exterior, the space underneath the top is left open, underlining its pure design. Above the right set of drawers, the signature 'Rampel' in brass inlay is visible. Nowadays, Van Rampelberg and his son still run a design workshop in Nairobi.
