Willy Ceysens, set of three coffee tables, cast aluminum, Belgium, 1970s.
This remarkable set is a true eye catcher with its outstanding cast aluminum exterior. The silver square tabletop with an eye-like engraving in the middle forms the center of this composition. Furthermore, the surface of the aluminum has distinct etching marks, giving the top a rugged relief. The square silver base underneath gives the top a floating appearance. Very striking is the difference in height between the three coffee tables, whereas one table is 5 inches higher, creating a playful composition.
Willy Ceysens (1929 - 2007) was a Belgian artist who created aluminum sculptures and design objects. He mostly used aluminum and glass as the medium for his artwork. His eccentric style is in conformity with the trend of decorative arts that arose in Belgium, and more specifically in Brussels during the 1970s. Other key-designers were Aldo Chale, Georges Mathias, Willy Daro and Lova Creation.
