Valzania Grand Armoire in Parchment and Brass
Valzania, armoire, parchment, brass, mahogany, mahogany veneer, ebonized wood, Italy, circa 1935
This grand armoire results from excellent craftsmanship combined with a well-balanced eye for the composition of functional and decorative elements. This wardrobe is a unique piece, both in its design and use of materials. The parchment is made with goatskin, as parchment originally was produced. The surface is furnished with square shaped slices of parchment, resulting in a rhythmic composition. The corpus rests on trapezoid shaped legs executed in ebonized wood. Remarkable detail are the brass hinges that illustrate an abstract Greek etching A sophisticated storage facility in mahogany veneer is created by the arrangement of the interior with shelves, drawers and a clothing rack. The design by Valzania has often been related to the aesthetics of Guglielmo Ulrich. Taking every stylistic realization into account, this wardrobe has the exact charm and vitality it needs to breathe the quintessentially Italian ethos of the thirties.
