Unique Sculptural Dutch Armchair in Mahogany

Armchair, solid mahogany, cream fabric upholstery, the Netherlands, 1927

Unique armchair in mahogany with a seating in cream colored fabric upholstery. This one-off chair was designed by a student of the Instituut voor Kunstnijverheidsonderwijs in 1927. It was chosen to be featured in a publication called Nederlandse Ambachts- en Nijverheidskunst, which displayed the very best of the student work of that year, throughout the various departments of the decorative arts academy. This academy is the predecessor of nowadays famous Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. The student, who followed courses at the department of interior design, were taught by teachers who were very much involved with the Dutch Art Deco movement, the Amsterdam School. These teachers included J.L.M. Lauweriks, who published his work often in the contemporary arts magazine Wendingen magazine, but also Barend Jorends and Bert Nienhuis.

The chair, made of mahogany, shows influences of the Amsterdam school, in the sense that it has a very sculptural appearance but also a very individual character as well. It is a great example of a search for shape and movement. Every part of the chair is sculpted, organic and dynamic. The legs are bent and tapered, the seating is sculpted, moving inwards and outwards, the armrests are rhythmic and the backrests echo all these shapes in a subtle manner. This chair is a true sculpture in wood, to be enjoyed by the seater and viewer.
