Tobia Scarpa for Cassina 'Soriana' Chaise Longue Chair in Dark Brown Leather
Afra & Tobia Scarpa, 'Soriana' chaise longue, leather and metal, Italy, 1969.
Iconic chaise longue by Italian designer couple Afra & Tobia Scarpa, the Soriana proposes a model that institutionalizes the image of the informal sitting where everything has a soft line. Here the mass of the material and the backrest is supported and contained by a metal armour. The uncanny, original design that consists of the large cushions, the tufted surface creates an vibrant appearance. Beautiful elements are the chromed metal parts which holds the cognac leather cushions on its place on the frame.
The leather shows signs of age and use and is richly patinated.
Afra (1937-2011) & Tobia (1935-) Scarpa both studied on the Venice Institute of Architecture. Tobia first worked for the Italian glass manufacturer Venini. From 1960 on the couple opened their own design office. Their work includes architecture and everyday items like furniture and clothing. Tobia & Afra designed for numerous major Italian and international companies like Flos, Gavina, B&B Italia, Cassina, Knoll International and many interior projects for numerous companies worldwide.
