Theo Ruth for Artifort Sofa in Beige Corduroy Upholstery
Theo Ruth for Artifort, sofa, fabric, wood, The Netherlands, 1970.
A Dutch settee in beige corduroy upholstery by Theo Ruth. The back tilts slightly backward and has the recognizable natural flow and feel of Ruth's design. The frame of the sofa is executed in an ingenious dark stained wooden frame. The seat seems to lean into the frame, inviting the sitter to sit down. The seating is thick and comfortable, which is something Ruth is known for.
Theo Ruth can be considered as the pioneer of the designs by Artifort. In 1936 he joined the company, first as cabinetmaker, later in 1939 as head of the design and development department. The Congo chair is his best known design and was a great commercial success for Artifort.
