Theo Ruth for Artifort, sofa model 109, oak, dark blue fabric, the Netherlands, 1950s

This sofa was designed by Theo Ruth in the 1950s. It features a sick three-seat cushion and backrest with tufted details. The two armrests point outwards and add a dynamic character to the design. The bright wooden frame contrasts with the upholstery that is in used but good condition.

Theo Ruth (1915-) can be considered as the Pioneer of the designs by Artifort. In 1936 he joined the company, first as cabinetmaker, later in 1939 as head of the design and development department. The Congo chair is his best-known design and was great sales success for Artifort.
