'Congo' lounge chair, in wood and fabric, by Theo Ruth for Artifort, the Netherlands, 1952.

This 'Congo' easy chair by Theo Ruth is upholstered in an 1980s style graphic fabric. The chair has a unique construction making use of tension and gravity. The back and seating are two separate elements that fit together like a pair of scissors to form this iconic chair. No nails or glue is needed. The sloping legs nicely follow the lines of the seating and back. The chair shows organic lines and curves, which contribute to the character of the chair.

Theo Ruth (1915-) could be seen as the Pioneer of the designs of Artifort. In 1936 he joined the company, first as cabinetmaker, later in 1939 as head of the design and development department. The Congo chair is his best known design and was great sales success for Artifort.
