Swiss Sofa Bed by Ernst Ambühler
Ernst Ambühler, sofa bed EA-616, blue fabric and chromed tubular steel, Switzerland, 1957.
This sofa bed in blue fabric is designed by Ernst Ambühler. The sofa was patented by Ambühler in 1962. He described the folding mechanism in this patent as follows: 'two pieces of chromed tubular steel, identical in shape, connect the sat and the backrest. These curved tubes are jointed with the seat in the rear and firmly fastened to the backrest. The shape of these tubes of steel makes two positions possible for the horizontal cushion.' The aesthetic appeal of the sofa bed lies in the clarity of its geometric shape. The bed consists of two free cushions that thanks to the metal tubes seem to float in space.
Please note that we advise to reupholster this piece.
