Studio BBPR for Olivetti, 'Spazio' table, steel, vinyl, plastic, Italy, ca. 1960

The 'Spazio' series was designed by Studio BBPR for Olivetti in 1960. It won the Compasso d'Oro Award in 1962. Today the desk of the 'Spazio' series is featured in MoMA permanent collection.

This ‘Spazio’ table can be used as breakfast, side or writing table. The red/brown vinyl tabletop rests on four legs that are connected via horizontal slats, meeting in a metal board in the middle. This table shows the typical characteristics of the ‘Spazio’ line that BBPR designed with great eye for proportions, textures and colors.

BBPR was an architectural partnership founded by Gianluigi Banfi (1910-1945), Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso (1909-2004), Enrico Peressutti (1908-1976) and Ernesto Nathan Rogers (1909-1969). BBPR was thus an acronym formed from the first letters of their family names. The partnership was founded in opposition to Fascism. BBPR wanted to develop a style that had no references to contemporary politics. During WW II, Gianluigi Banfi died in the camps of the Nazi’s whereas the others were also severely defined by this era.
