Studio BBPR for Olivetti, 'Spazio' sideboard, steel, vinyl, plastic, Italy, ca. 1960

This free-standing ‘Spazio’ sideboard features two sliding doors with a lock. The top in vinyl hangs slightly over the doors. Notable are also the gaps at the side that add to the industrial look of the piece. It shows the typical characteristics of the ‘Spazio’ line that BBPR designed with great eye for proportions, textures and colors.

The 'Spazio' series was designed by Studio BBPR for Olivetti in 1960. It won the Compasso d'Oro Award in 1962. Today the desk of the 'Spazio' series is featured in MoMA's permanent collection.

BBPR was an architectural partnership founded by Gianluigi Banfi (1910-1945), Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso (1909-2004), Enrico Peressutti (1908-1976) and Ernesto Nathan Rogers (1909-1969) in 1932. BBPR was thus an acronym formed from the first letters of their family names. The architects found each other in their opposition to fascism in Italy in the 1930s and 1940s. The architects therefore believed in developing a style that would have no references to contemporary politics. During the Second World War, Belgiojoso and Banfi were both imprisoned at the Mauthausen concentration camp. Banfi died in the camps, whereas the others were also severely defined by this era. Despite the immense loss of Banfi, their architectural practice continued in the same name as before. In 1954 the architects reacted against the International Style with their creation of the Torre Velasca in Milan, with strong references to medieval architecture. The architects were also frequently employed to create interior spaces altogether with furniture designs.
