Sergio Rodrigues 'Sheriff' Sofa in Black Leatherette and Imbuia
Sergio Rodrigues, 'Sheriff' sofa, black leatherette and imbuia wood, Brazil, 1960s
Comfortable and large sofa by Brazilian designer Sergio Rodriques. This sofa breaths the characteristics of Brazilian modern furniture design. Made of traditional materials like the lesser known imbiua wood. The leatherette seat and armrests are opulently furnished in square shaped panels and buttons across the whole upholstery. By its straps and buckles this sofa has a sturdy character, a trademark of Rodrigues. The construction and wood-joints of this sofa are nicely visible. The sofa holds its original black leatherette upholstery. The wide cushions are highly comfortable and aesthetically pleasing.
Sergio Rodrigues (1927-2014) started working in the 1950s, when the foundations of modern Brazilian architecture where already laid out, yet furniture was still expressing styles of the past and not the clean lines that modernist architecture and life demanded. Rodrigues set himself to this task: to design furniture that was both truly Brazilian and modernist at the same time. Over his working life, Rodrigues designed more than 1200 different models of furniture. Rodrigues has also worked closely with Oscar Niemeyer, as the latter's interior designer of choice for his buildings in Brasilia. The result of Rodrigues's relentless search for contemporary Brazilian design has lead to a very peculiar design language. That of a robust, personal and pure language. Yet what is important is that Rodrigues never really let go of the tradition of Brazilian design either, using local wood as jacaranda. His design is therefore seen as the true expression of Brazilian spirit, warm, happy, sturdy and robust.
