Hans-Christian Hansen and Viggo Jørgensen for Johannes Hansen, side chair, red buffalo leather, ash, Denmark, 1936
This chair, already designed in 1936, is a very early example of Scandinavian Modern design with clear simplified lines and high quality materials. This rare chair by Hansen and Jørgensen was first designed in 1936 and in that same year presented at the Danish Carpenter's Guild Exhibition. A year later, in 1937, the chair was shown in Paris, at the World Exhibition. Here it won the silver medal. The design of this chair is sensuous and simplistic. The back, existing of a bent piece upholstered with red buffalo leather is abundant in its size and curve. The seat, upholstered in the same high quality leather is thick and balances perfectly with the back. The frame is executed in ash and the legs are all rounded and straight. The round shape of the frame matches the soft lines and curved, almost organic lines perfectly.
