Rare Andrea Busiri Vici Lounge Chair in Jade Green Upholstery
Andrea Busiri Vici, armchair, faux leather, beech, Italy, 1950s
This charming chair stands as a rare creation from the Italian architect and designer Andrea Busiri Vici (1903-1989). Beloning to a family with a history of architects, his elder brothers, Clemente and Michele, obtained their degrees as architectural engineers. Following his own graduation from the Politecnico di Milano in 1929, Andrea shared a studio with them. Over time, while maintaining occasional collaborations, each of them established their own independent practices in Rome. The brothers collectively left an indelible mark on the field of design and architecture. They owned strong connections within the Roman community and were engaged in a wide range of activities, including designing, decorating, and furnishing various public and private buildings. Featured in the Stile Magazine in 1941, Gio Ponti described Andrea as follows: "specialized in interior decorations, from the beginning of his profession he was able to harmoniously blend the ancient with the modern, thus anticipating by years what has today become a style. Its houses and interiors are modern and traditional at the same time and in them hovers a spirit of Romanism and elegance."
Andrea Busiri Vici, known for his masterful fusion of classical and modern elements, designed a chair that perfectly embraces this artistic vision. Its sinuous, organic contours, particularly evident in the gracefully curved backrest, exude elegance and sophistication. The presence of delicate piping serves to accentuate the undulating silhouette. The corpus is upholstered in a fine jade green leatherette, which beautifully complements the nature-inspired forms of this piece. All in all, this design marries timeless aesthetic with a contemporary touch, symbolizing Busiri Vici's eclectic approach to furniture design.
