Piet Hein & Bruno Mathsson for Fritz Hansen Dining Table

Sale price$3,300.00

Extendable dining table, beech, steel, by Piet Hein, Arne Jacobsen & Bruno Mathsson for Fritz Hansen, Denmark, 1968.

Super-Ellipse dining table in lacquered beech and steel. This version is produced by Fritz Hansen in the 1980s. This table was designed by Piet Hein and Bruno Mathsson. Hein came up with the super ellipse form when he was designing a city square in Stockholm. He wanted to create a form in which traffic could flow as freely as possible. The super ellipse became the perfect compromise between a circle and a rectangle. The span legs are also a collaboration between Hein and Mathsson. They began this design for this in 1954.

Bruno Mathsson (1907-1988) started out as an apprentice cabinet maker in his father practice. In the beginning of the thirties, Mathsson started to experiment with the bending of wood. His early designs are organic, curvaceous and made from natural materials. His style was prior to the Scandinavian mid-century style. Piet Hein (1905-1996) was a writer, poet, mathematician, city planner and designer. He was known as a Danish all-rounder.
