Pierre Paulin for Artifort, sofa model '442/3', leatherette, steel, The Netherlands, 1962.

This eccentric three-seat sofa is based on a solid construction featuring clear lines and geometrical shapes executed in a subtle way. The seat is supported by chromed steel legs that epitomize a simplistic structure. Pierre Paulin created a well-proportioned piece that radiates comfort while still being eccentric and stylish.

Pierre Paulin (1927-2009) was a French postwar designer who studied sculpture. But his study was not what influenced Paulin as he was a mediocre student and is a self made designer, so he claimed himself. Paulin saw the importance of the social role of design and for this he looked at Nordic modernity and simplicity for inspiration. A great talent of Paulin was that he could envision the concepts of his furniture in 3D in his mind. Paulin was someone who researched his design thoroughly.
