Paul Evans 'Cityscape' sideboard for Directional, chrome on wood, United States, circa 1972. A two-doors credenza designed by Paul Evans. A real eyecatcher which interacts with its surrounding and the reflection of the light. The sideboard is part of the line 'Cityscape' that is inspired by the Manhattan skyline. This line of furniture is produced by Directional between 1971 and 1981. It features a patchwork of square pieces of chrome in different dimensions. Paul Evans (1931-1987) was a protagonist of American craft-based postwar art and design. He is known for working between the boundaries of art, craft and furniture design. It is almost impossible to put Paul Evans into a certain stylistic corner. He is slick and shiny at one moment, whilst at the other being robust and rough. Evans only definite characterization is the fact that he offered a handmade, bold reaction to the machine aesthetics.
