Dining chairs, model 'Rungstedlund' PJ 34 by Ole Wanscher for P. Jeppesen, St. Heddinge, mahogany, blue upholstery, Denmark, 1960s.
These classic dining chairs are designed by the Danish designer Ole Wanscher features a slightly reclining back and a curved, horizontal slat that functions both as the backrest and constructional element. The tapered legs bear references to 19th century saber legs giving this set a Classic, almost stately elegance. Executed in beautiful dark grained mahogany and still featuring the original seat upholstery.
Ole Wanscher (1903-1985) was educated as an architect under Kaare Klint and later came to teach architecture at the Royal Danish Academy himself. His focus and specialty however was on design. Yet whilst his background was in architecture he laid great importance on construction and the impact of form on space. He also came to be influenced by the new techniques of producing high-quality furniture on an Industrial scale. So the idea of creating furniture for everyone was something that Wanscher was familiar with yet his most exquisite and iconic designs are made by the hands of the best cabinet makers in Denmark. It is therefore that this Danish master has left a legacy of Classic, durable and highly refined pieces.
