Martin Grierson 'London' Chair in Leather and Rosewood
Martin Grierson for Arflex, swivel lounge chair, rosewood, leather and metal, 1960, Italy.
Extraordinary piece of furniture! This swivel club chair, designed by Martin Grierson features a sophisticated, yet bulky appearance. The design of this chair is both modernist and contemporary. The shell of this club chair is constructed of two elements of beautiful, dark rosewood that is connected via a large, overstated polyester joint. The shell itself rests on a metal pedestal foot. The tufted leather forms an interesting contrast to the otherwise modern and constructive shell and base.
The leather is in good condition with some some signs of age and use. The metal shows an aesthetic patina all over. The black lacquer on the metal joints that connects the rosewood shells misses some ships.
Martin Grierson’s (1932) is an English designer. He has spent the first part of his career as assistant to other architects and designers. He has founded his own design firm in 1975 after he had spent 15 years as a freelance designer. In his own words: “I set out to make proper pieces of furniture that exploit traditional forms of construction but are, never the less, expressions of today”.
