Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler for Forma, lounge chair, coated iron, velvet, Brazil, 1950s
Elegant and modern armchair by Brazilian designer duo Hauner & Eisler. The thin, elegant frame is made in black coated iron. Due to the diagonal connection and lines of the frame, this lounge chair gets a delicate appearance. The armrest runs smoothly over into the seating. The seat itself reclines backwards giving these chairs a playful dynamic appearance. The green velvet has recently been upholstered and is in very good condition.
Along with many of the most important Brazilian designers, Martin Eisler (1913-1977) was educated in Europe. He studied architecture in Austria after which he moved to Buenos Aires in 1938. In the same year, he founded an architecture firm and organized an exhibition of his furniture. Carlo Hauner (1927-1996), just as Eisler, studied in Europe at the Brera Academy in Milan, Italy. Once arrived in Brazil, after 1948, he dedicated himself to textile, ceramics, furniture and architecture. Eisler and Hauner met in 1953, a little while after Hauner founded Moveís Artesenal, a production company. Together they started Galeria Artesenal, a store to accompany Moveís Artsenal. Hauner and Eisler’s designs are characterized by their use of native woods to Brazil such accompanied by thin tubular frames.

In 1951, the Hauner brothers bought Lina Bo Bardi and Pietro Bardi's Pau-Brazil factory, which would be renamed after Móveis Artesenal. Later on, he would associate with new partners Martin Eisler and Ernesto Wolf, with whom he would later create the company Forma. Hauner himself left a small legacy of mainly upholstered furniture.
