Mario Bellini for Cassina, 'Quartet' sofa model 932, leather, metal, Italy, 1964
Mario Bellini designed this modular sofa for Cassina. The sofa is a reinterpretation of classic furniture that always uses padded cushions. He experimented with these cushions and decided to get rid of the piece of furniture itself and instead use the cushions as a piece of furniture in itself. This results in a piece that is just that: independent cushions connected by a belt passed around the outside. The sofa is therefore extremely comfortable.
Mario Bellini (1935-) is trained as an architect and became one of the leading designers in postwar Italian style. In the beginning of his career, he worked together with Olivetti and Cassina which resulted in an early knowledge of synthetic resins and polyurethanes. His furniture is exciting, both in its use of material as in the originality of his designs. Bellini did not believe in precise boundaries of design, instead, he designed for the relationship of man and environment. It is impossible to pigeon hole Bellini's oeuvre, as his work is so complex and original.
Please note that the leather shows small tears and wear. Therefore, restoration is advised. This can be done before shipping by our experienced craftsmen and -women in our own in-house restoration atelier. With high attention for the original, they make sure every piece retains its value and is ready for the many years to come. We kindly ask you to contact our design experts for further information about the endless possibilities our restoration and upholstery atelier has to offer. Of course, a locally organized reupholstery or restoration is possible as well.
