Mario Bellini for B&B Italia, pair of 'Amanta' lounge chairs, fabric, fiberlite, Italy, 1966
Mario Bellini used a fiberlite (fiberglass-reinforced polyester) shell to realize his design of the 'Amanta' lounge chairs. The shell rests on four ball-shaped legs. The seating cushions rest on the shell that has a low frame at the sides and a curve with vertical gap in the back. Currently upholstered in a beige striped fabric the cushions contrast with the black frame. The 'Amanta' design is created for flexible use since each lounge chair can also be placed together to be used as a sofa.
Mario Bellini (1935-) is trained as an architect and became one of the leading designers in postwar Italian style. In the beginning of his career, he worked together with Olivetti and Cassina which resulted in an early knowledge of synthetic resins and polyurethanes. His furniture is exciting, both in its use of material as in the originality of his designs. Bellini did not believe in precise boundaries of design, instead, he designed for the relationship of man and environment. It is impossible to pigeon hole Bellini's oeuvre, as his work is so complex and original.
