Living room set attributed to Giuseppe Pagano, curved wooden structure coated rope, Italy, 1940s.

This living room set is executed in wood and coated rope. The design of this set, consisting of a sofa, stool and coffee table, is minimalist yet not in a puritan way. The armrests seem to rise upwards and are typical for futuristic design by Giuseppe Pagano Pogatschnig. The roped seat and backrest are simplistic and almost identical.

Giuseppe Pagano (1896-1945) was an Croatian-Italian architect who designed many industrial buildings and furnishings. Initially, Giuseppe designed within the political framework of fascism with futuristic and rationalist designs. Later, he started to criticize the bombastic architecture of the regime and for that reason was imprisoned in a concentration camp where he died from pneumonia.
