Louis Kalff, chandelier, glass, brass, metal, the Netherlands, 1932

This stunning 117in. (298m.) large chandelier was a commissioned design by Louis Kalff for a representative private Villa in the south of the Netherlands. The lamp has been hanging on its location since 1932 for the past ninety years where it brightened up the living room. Kalff did not only just design the chandelier but as an architect also the villa itself. More details about the provenance can be revealed upon request.

Spreading an even toned light both upright to the ceiling and downwards into the living room, the chandelier creates a warm ambience while invoking curiosity at the same time. Its large, unusual oval shape catches the eye. The glass is organically shaped like a coral and held together by streamlined geometric brass ornaments. The design consists of two layers of which the first one emits most light, and the second one gulfs over in an open form. The glass hangs from the ceiling from three brass holders. The way the delicate glass elements are arranged, evokes a strong resemblance designs made by Venini in the 1930s. Under the direction of Carlo Scarpa, the company started to design lamps consisting of individual, separate glass parts that were combined into large, elegant chandeliers. Due to the visual accordance and the fact that the villa featured more lamps made by Venini, it can be assumed that this example was made by Venini too.

Louis Christiaan Kalff (1897-1976) was a Dutch graphic designer, architect and interior designer. After high school, Kalff decided to study at the Kunstnijverheidsschool Quellinus Amsterdam (now the renowned Rietveld Academy) and at the Technische Hogeschool in Delft. Between 1925 and 1926 he started accepting architectural assignments. Together with his good friend Jan Hanrath, he designed the building of the Delftse Studenten Roeivereniging "Laga" in the style of the Amsterdamse School. In the same year he went working at the commercial department at Philips in Eindhoven where he designed the Philips-logo, lamps, books, posters and printed matter for advertising brands such as Calvé, the Holland-Amerika line and the Dutch Radio.
