Large set of 'Congo' lounge chairs, in wood and fabric, by Theo Ruth for Artifort, the Netherlands, 1952.

Large set of the iconic Congo easy chairs by Theo Ruth. These chairs have a unique construction, forced by tension and gravity. The back and seating are two separate elements that fit together to form this iconic chair. The sloping legs nicely follow the lines of the seating and back. These chairs show beautiful organic lines and curves, which contribute to the character of the chair.

Theo Ruth (1915-) could be seen as the Pioneer of the designs of Artifort. In 1936 he joined the company, first as cabinetmaker, later in 1939 as head of the design and development department. The Congo chair is his best known design and was great sales success for Artifort.

Please note that we have more Congo chairs in stock. If you wish to reupholster these chairs please do not hesitate to ask any of our advisors for more information. Our upholstery studio can offer you almost any possible option, may it be leather, fabric or COM.
