Phillip Lloyd Powell, sideboard, American black walnut, gold leaf, slate, New Hope, United States, early 1960s

This exquisite large sideboard is designed by Phillip Lloyd Powell and executed in solid black walnut. The cabinet consists of four compartments and on the left an additional platform, inlayed with slate. The two left compartments contain 8 drawers, of which one features a giltwood front. On the right one of the sliding doors has features a relief of organic shapes. Hence Powell used the qualities of the walnut as a strong and defining feature for this cabinet. The wood joints together with the exclusive use of materials, textures and the highlight with a gold leaf drawer characterizes Powell’s craftsmanship and eye for great design.

Phillip Lloyd Powell (1920-2008) was an American self-taught designer who designed natural, sinuous and textural furniture. All of his pieces are handmade from high quality, grained woods that often recall their natural shape and form. Another natural material that he often used was slate, the deep grey material was often used for table or credenza tops. He was a man who only want to produce exquisite pieces. His shop was thus only open on Saturday evenings. In comparison to his contemporary, George Nakashima, he only had a very small production, as he produced about 10.000 pieces. It was in fact Nakashima who urged Powell to begin designing for himself in the first place. In the beginning of his career Powell shared his workshop with Paul Evans, but when both their business had grown, they decided to go solo. Philip Lloyd Powell's furniture is now known for its solid, natural, sensuous and exquisitely well-crafted handmade pieces.
