Kwok Hoi Chan for Steiner, modular sofa, model ´chromatic´, brown upholstery, France, circa 1970.
Organic modular sofa designed by the Hong Kongese designer Kwok Hoi Chan. This grand piece of furniture contains six elements which can be arranged to your own liking. In addition, two or even three separate seatings can be created. Characteristic are the flowing lines of the upholstery, emphasized by the vertical fluid stitching of the seating.
Kwok Hoi Chan (1920-1990) was an emblematic figure of international design who emigrated from Hong Kong to England and France. In France, he paired up with the Parisian manufacturer Steiner. Even though Kwok Hoi Chan was deeply involved in European and international design he has always stayed loyal to his Chinese origins. His furniture resembles an imaginary alphabet borrowed from Chinese calligraphy. His trademark is a suspended tubular frame which is combined with an organic shaped seating.
