Josef Hoffmann ‘Fledermaus’ Dining Chairs in Floral Upholstery
Josef Hoffmann, ‘Fledermaus’ dining chairs, beech, fabric, Austria, design 1907
This pair of dining chairs is specially designed by Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) for the Cabaret Fledermaus in Vienna in 1907. This building was understood as a place where the ‘boredom’ of contemporary life would be replaced by ‘ease, art and culture.’ The design of the dining chair fits perfectly into this ethos thanks to its bentwood that is enriched with round small spheres and engraved rings. Furthermore, the frame is composed of elegantly curved lines and round edges, contributing to the chair’s sculptural appearance. The upholstery of the seat and backrest has a soft burgundy color and features illustrative flora and elegant lines, finished with a brownish braided piping. Overall, this pair of dining chairs is a standout and can serve as a taste of delicateness at the dining table.
Please note that the upholstery shows minor signs of wear and age, mainly visible on the braided piping.
