Ilmari Tapiovaara for Laukaan Puu, side table, model 'Pirkka', pine, lacquered wood, Finland, 1950

This pine coffee table is modest and simple in its design and a true ambassador of the Nordic style. This means that it is well-constructed as can be seen in the rigid, solid dovetail wood-joints. Another typical Nordic feature is the warm, natural feeling this side table creates. This table is very versatile and was designed to be used as such, Tapiovaara created the piece for the small to average household, meaning it was intended to be used in various manners, something that saved space. It can function as a bench, or table. The piece is executed in pine, a material that generates its quality and expression over time. Stamped with the Laukaan Puu logo and in an excellent condition.

Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914-1999) was trained as an interior designer and at the beginning of his career, during World War II, Tapiovaara designed gear for the Finnish army, meaning that he got used to work with very common materials such as local woods and no nails or screws where available. Later in his career he founded his own practice with his wife and had many assignments for schools and universities.
