Ilmari Tapiovaara for La Permanente Mobili Cantù Bookcase in Teak
IImari Tapiovaara for La Permanente Mobili Cantù, bookcase, teak, fabric, Italy, circa 1957
Crafted from teak, this exquisite bookcase is the creation of Finnish designer Ilmari Tapiovaara. Its sleek lines provide an elegant platform for displaying your cherished items. The adjustable division, facilitated by fabric sliding panels, allows for a personalized arrangement. The harmonious blend of teak and beige fabric panels introduces a delightful contrast to the warm wooden aesthetic. Notably, Tapiovaara's talent was recognized in the 'Living Environment Category' competition, where he received the "Secondo Premio ex-aequo" prize, as decided by a panel of judges, including Carlo Mollino, for a similar design.
Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914-1999) was trained as an interior designer and at the beginning of his career, during World War Two, Tapiovaara designed gear for the Finnish army, meaning that he got used to work with very common materials such as local woods and no nails or screws where available. Later in his career, he founded his own practice with his wife and had many assignments for schools and universities.
