Illum Wikkelsø Easy Chair in Oak and Leather
Illum Wikkelsø for Mikael Laursen, easy chair model 103, leather and oak, Denmark, 1960s.
This easy chair is a design by Illum Wikkelsø but produced by master-carver and cabinetmaker Mikael Laursen. The leather is attached to the frame and nonchalantly drapes across the frame, a feature that contributes to the chair's ergonomic quality. The chair is comfortable as the leather supports the body, the weight creates natural dent in the leather.
Illum Wikkelsø (1919-1999) is trained as a carpenter and later studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. He first worked for the Danish furniture maker Jacob Kjær and the architect Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard until 1954 when he opened his studio on the outskirts of Aarhus. Here he designed especially simple and elegant seating with great functionality, now considered classics of Danish furniture design. The style of his work varies from Kaare Klint's classicism to the soft organic craft by Arne Jacobsen.
Please note that the leather shows signs of wear and use.
