Giuseppi Scapinelli, lounge chair, lacquered wood and fabric, Brazil, 1950s
This eloquent lounge chair is structured by a sensuous shaped backseat combined with sculptural shaped armrests. The diagonally placed legs lift the seat vigorously. The sharp lines contrast with the curved shapes in the seat and armrests, creating a disharmonious look. The upholstery is executed in pastel colors, such as orange, yellow, green, and off-white and structured in various geometrical shapes, resulting in a striking abstract composition.
Giuseppi Scapinelli (1891-1982) was a designer, furniture maker and dealer in Sao Paulo. Scapinelli, born in Italy, was a designer who was on top of the zeitgeist. His designs are voluptuous, generous and comfortable. The rounded curves combined with the clean lines of the back hint towards his Italian origins.
