Gianfranco Frattini for Cassina, round coffee table, walnut, glass, Italy, 1950s
This rare coffee table is executed within a well-proportioned construction based on a geometric layout. The circle is repetitive in every element, which contributes to the table's unified and harmonious look. The glass top exposes the platform that can be used as a storage space to store or display magazines, books or other personal belongings. The walnut texture is very pronounced, showing vivid grains and a warm hue. This piece of furniture can be the centre of attention in one's interior.
Gianfranco Frattini (1926-2004) was born in Padua and studied architecture at the Milan Politechnico. After his studies, Frattini started working for Gio Ponti until 1956. Afterwards, he opened his own practice in Milan and began creating his own designs. His work is mostly part of the generation that created the Italian design movement of the late 1950s through the 1960s. The designer eventually died in Milan in 2004.
