French Tortoise Shell and Brass Table Lamp circa 1970
Maria Pergay (attribution), brass, tortoiseshell, brushed steel, France, circa 1970.
This table lamp is attributed to Maria Pergay. The piece is a-typical for French design of the 1970s as the style of the time was very functionalist, objective and held socialistic ideals. This piece however, together with other designs from Pergay, is luxurious, decorative and would not be misplaced in a cabinet of curiosities. This piece fits in with other pieces that make use of turtle shell such as the turtle sofa made for Pierre Cardin. Pergay, who does not want to fit in a certain descriptive box as designer or artist is very versatile. This piece cannot be put into a certain category either, as it is sculptural and decorative yet at the same time functional.
