Room divider, 'laque d'argent no. 1060', lacquered wood, etched copper, France, 1970s

Beautiful and elegant room divider made in France in the 1970s. This French room divider shows many sources of inspiration: the ever impressing French Art Deco period of the 1920 and 1930s, but also more historic and traditional roots such a Japanese artifacts in lacquered wood. During the 1970s, cultural interest sparked in the Art Deco style and art and decorative objects of the period became coveted items again. Artists of the 1970s were inspired as well and, just as the artists of the Art Deco period, were interested in traditional Japanese and Chinese techniques of centuries ago. This room divider is an excellent example of that inspiration. Five panels show an imaginative display of leafs, branches and flowers and a flowing composition. An etched copper plate was covered by black lacquer that was partly removed to create the floral composition. The metal plate shows beautiful variety in gold, copper, silver and oxidized green shades. The room divider is inscribed with a handwritten note that states 'laque d'argent No. 1060'.
