Franz Xaver Lutz for Deutsche Werkstätten, 'Chimney' chair model 1192, oak, original patinated black leather, Germany, 1958
This early 'chimney' chair is designed by Franz Xaver Lutz. The easy chair bears a strong resemblance to Spanish and Scandinavian hunting chairs. The design is aptly named 'chimney' chair as these types of lounge chairs are often used to relax by a fireplace. The slightly sloped back and the use of adaptable leather as main material provides great comfort. The frame is made out of solid oak and the two front legs rise slightly upwards, highlighting the sharp edge where the frame bends downwards into the legs. A sculptural, sturdy design that is both modest and original.
