Franz Xaver Sproll, pair of night stands, elm, Switzerland, 1960s.

Swiss furniture maker Franz Xaver Sproll is known for high-quality, hand-crafted furniture in solid wood, featuring characteristic details. This night stand, par example, shows the craftsman’s work in the way that the edges have imperfections on the surface that show the craftsman’s hand. The viewer can follow the lines of the craftsman that treated the elm. Same goes for the exceptional grip with a slightly curved form and a faceted surface. Storage space is created by means of a drawer and some space underneath that can be accessed through a drop-down door panel. The overall well-balanced proportions of the night stand and the geometric outlay with hand-crafted features, is contrasted by the natural, expressive grain of the elmwood.
