Finn Juhl for Niels Vodder, dining table, Oregon pine, formica, Denmark, designed in 1958

Finn Juhl designed this dining table specifically for the house of Knud Vodder, the son and maker of this table Niels Vodder. This table was first presented at the Cabinetmakers' Guild exhibition in 1958. Finn Juhl created a coherent table which is achieved by his implementation of purely geometric forms. Not only the structure of each individual element, but also the arrangement of color emphasizes the table's composition of straight and right-angled lines and shapes. The table top is executed in Oregon pine, a type of wood from the coastal areas and mountains of North America. On each side, a fold-down leave is attached which allows the user to enlarge the surface of the table. The material that has been used for the leave is formica, which is able to withstand boiling water, heat, food acids, alcohol, and alkalies found in the home and can easily be cleaned. The top is mounted on runner legs in Oregon pine that give the table a light and airy appearance. This is enhanced by the table's color palette: green and blue leaves, a light yellow-brown pine, and a black lacquered rail.

Finn Juhl (1912-1989), born in Denmark, planned on becoming an art historian when he was young. His father decided it would be a better career move if he went to become an architect. After graduating in architecture, Juhl worked for ten years with Vilhelm Lauritzen. At the age of 33, Juhl opened his own furniture design practice. In the 1940s he designed a number of creations that regenerated Danish furniture design and broke with the established furniture tradition. Juhl is now known as the one of the most important pioneers of Danish design. He was in fact the first Danish furniture designer to gain widespread international recognition. His work was vital to spreading the “Danish Modern” concept around the world. His designs are known for being exquisitely elegant, refined up until the smallest detail and extremely well executed.
