Frits Henningsen, sofa, teak, cognac leather, Denmark, 1930s
This classic sofa was designed and produced by master cabinetmaker Frits Henningsen in the 1930s. The design is well-balanced, showing an interesting contrast between the straight lines of the solid wood frame and the almost theatrical curves of the outwards bending armrests. The sofa shows great attention for proportions, as well as the outstanding craftsmanship Henningsen's work is famous for. The comfort provided by this inviting sofa is very pleasant, which is emphasized by the gently curved armrests. With the admirable patina of the cognac leather the sofa gets an even more expressive look.
Frits Henningsen (1889-1965) was a Danish cabinetmaker. Relatively little has been written about this master of furniture design. He had his own shop in Copenhagen. His main concerns were the users of his furniture and the solid quality of his work. All his works are done by his own workshop.
