Ernst Ambühler for Teo Jacob, sofa bed EA-616, blue-green fabric and chromed tubular steel, Switzerland, 1957
This sofa bed in blue-green fabric is designed by Ernst Ambühler for Teo Jacob. The sofa was patented by Ambühler in 1962. The backrest can be folded down on the same level like the seat and forms a daybed. The designer described the folding mechanism in this patent as follows: 'two pieces of chromed tubular steel, identical in shape, connect the seat and the backrest. These curved tubes are jointed with the seat in the rear and firmly fastened to the backrest. The shape of these tubes of steel makes two positions possible for the horizontal cushion.' The aesthetic appeal of the sofa bed lie in the clarity of its geometric shape. The bed consists of two free cushions that thanks to the metal tubes seem to float in space.
