Ernest Igl Futuristic 'Jet' Writing Desk by Ernest Igl
Ernest Igl for Bayer AG, desk model 'Jet', fiberglass, Germany, 1960s.
Space Age writing table designed by Ernest Igl in the 1960s and produced in 1970. The desk is executed in ivory colored fiberglass with six antracite colored drawers. There is a small space between the off-white table top and the storage compartments, which creates a floating effect. A futuristic design by Ernest Igl that became an icon over the years, with its peak when the orange edition starred in the movie Men in Black.
Ernest Igl's design philosophy rejected angular shapes and exclusively used soft, rounded shapes. Since his designs were too complicated to be manufactured with the wood processing machines of that time, he decided to go for plastic as the main material.
