Martin Eisler and Carlo Hauner, pair of early edition ‘Reversible’ chairs, brass, fabric, iron, jute, straw, Brazil, 1955

Iconic ‘Reversible’ chairs by Eisler and Hauner designed in 1955. This design is sculptural in its appearance. Special feature is the half-round shaped seat that is movable in its angle. An eye-shaped backrest completes the design.
This early edition of the ‘Reversible’ chair is rare to find. What makes this particular pair special is the unique upholstery. A combination of straw, cloth and padding covers seat and backrest. These natural materials create a vibrant, soft surface and contrast with the iron frame. The thin frame consists of multiple iron legs that stand on brass feet.

Along with many of the most important Brazilian designers, Martin Eisler (1913-1977) was educated in Europe. He studied architecture in Austria and moved to Buenos Aires in 1938. In the same year, he founded an architecture firm and organized an exhibition of his furniture. From 1952 onwards he came to Sao Paulo where he worked with Carlo Hauner and Ernesto Wolf to found Móveis Artesenal in 1995 which would later become Forma. Carlo Hauner (1927-1996), just as Eisler, studied in Europe at the Brera Academy in Milan, Italy. Once arrived in Brazil, after 1948, he dedicated himself to textile, ceramics, furniture and architecture. Eisler and Hauner met in 1953, a little while after Hauner founded Moveís Artesenal, a furniture production company. Together they started Galeria Artesenal, a store to accompany Moveís Artsenal and designed the furniture together.
