Early Emiel Veranneman Sideboard in Oak
Emiel Veranneman, sideboard, oak, metal, enamel, Belgium, 1950s
A very rare early piece by the Belgian designer and artist Emiel Veranneman. This robust sideboard in oak has stunning detailing and is a very high quality piece. The doors have a coarse ribbed structure, and the large patinated handles at both sides are also remarkable. The sideboard stands on a stone base at both sides. In the front of the sideboard your eyes get drawn to the metal figuration of human figures and horses. Overall the piece has great patina that enriches the piece greatly.
What is special about this piece is that it was made very early in the career of Emiel Veranneman. His choice of wood and other materials in this piece were used in the 1950s. In the 1960s and 1970s he mainly designed sideboards and cabinets in a very graphic and colorful high gloss lacquer, and exotic wood types.
Emiel Veranneman (1924-2003) had a very important role in art scene in Belgium. After the Second World War he began his career in designing furniture. His work, because of his vision and creativity, is most of times indistinguishable from art in stead of furniture. However, he designed pieces without compromising their functionality throughout his whole career.
