Dutch Striped Black and White Settee circa 1950
Artifort sofa, black and white fabric, wood, The Netherlands, 1950s.
This sofa is an iconic example of Dutch design from the 1950s. The sofa is on the one hand simplistic, with elegant, subtle lines. On the other hand the settee has a certain theatrical aesthetic with armrests flowing outwards and a buttoned back. The settee is equipped with wooden feet that are narrow and conically tapered. The fabric of both seat and back shows a black and white asymmetric, almost organic stripes. The armrests are all black. The fabric features a repaired tear on the back.
