Sale price$33,000.00

Dining room set consisting of a dining table in granite by Mario Botta and 'Cab' chairs by Mario Bellini
Mario Botta for Alias, dining table model ‘Terzo’, metal, granite, Italy, 1983

The ‘Terzo’ dining table features a long rectangular granite tabletop that consists of three parts and shows a beautiful sparkle and a play of different color shaded from dark grey to white. It rests on a U-shaped thick tubular base. Two circular metal tubes run alongside each other and connect on the floor. Thin metal arms lift the top up from the base so that it almost seems to flow above the legs.

Mario Botta (1943) was born in the south of Switzerland. After attending the Art College in Milan he then continued his studies at the University Institute of Architecture in Venice where he studied under Carlo Scarpa and Giuseppe Mazzariol until 1969. During his studies he also got to know Le Corbusier and Louis I. Kahn. Botta’s own studio focusses since 1970 onwards on public buildings as well as private projects and furniture design. In 1983 Botta got nominated as a professor at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale in Lausanne and since then enjoys teaching next to his practice as a designer and architect.

Mario Bellini for Cassina, armchairs model 'CAB 413', leather, Italy, 1979

The iconic ‘CAB’ chairs were designed by Mario Bellini in 1979. Conceptually new was the way Bellini uses leather to cover the whole chair in one monochrome layer. The red to brown leather is stitched at the sides in a precise manner and spans dynamically over the whole chair. A nice detail is how the back elegantly runs over into the armrests, developing in a delicate curved shape at both ends.

Mario Bellini (1935) is an internationally renowned Italian architect and designer. Born in Milan, Bellini earned his PhD in architecture at the Polytechnic University of Milan in 1959. After his graduation, Bellini started working as an architect, and as a consultant for the Italian electronics company Olivetti. Besides architecture and electronics, Bellini also dedicated his career to automotive and furniture design. He has designed numerous items for Vitra, Artemide, Kartell, Cassina and more. The iconic 1977 Cab Chair for Cassina is one of Bellini's most prominent designs. The appreciation of his outstanding work has been made clear with eight Compasso d'Oro design awards. Over 20 items of his works are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
