Vladimir Kagan, chaise longue ‘Capricorn’, lacquered metal, United States, 1958

Wonderful ‘Capricorn’ chaise longue by Vladimir Kagan. A grid of white metal forms a rather fluid formed seat. Due to the open grid and the thin base, the chaise longue has a very airy and also sculptural look. Two legs in front are joined by a wheel in the back, thus the item is flexible to move around in your indoor or outdoor space. The originally white lacquer now shows a striking patina that contributes to the unique expression of the model.

Kagan designed the ‘Capricorn Collection’ exclusively for the New York based department store ‘W. & J. Sloane’. The idea of tri-symmetric designs showed earlier in Kagan’s oeuvre already. But the ‘Capricorn’ was difficult to manufacture as it needed to be welded, wire bended and rust protected in a special way. Kagan first got in contact with a shopping-card maker. When they were not able to produce the fluid forms, he turned towards a fire-escape company to achieve his vision.

Vladimir Kagan (1927-2016) was born in Germany and grew up in the United States where his father opened a cabinet shop. Later, Kagan joined the family business. Here the designer experimented with organically sculpted wood in works that became the hallmarks of his career. Kagan himself explains that his father always said 'measure three times and cut once' whereas Kagan did exactly the opposite. He also believed that there was no way that ratio could replace luck. Kagan's furniture has the extraordinary ability to completely change the landscape of the room even it is with one single object. Kagan's work looks truly original, even up to today.
