Paul Frankl for Johnson Furniture, coffee table 'No 5005', lacquered cork, mahogany, USA, 1950s.

This biomorphic shaped coffee table designed by Paul Frankl has a cork laminated tabletop. The bright tone of the cloud-like designed shape forms a striking contrast with the dark mahogany legs.

The Austrian born architect Paul Frankl (1886-1958) first worked in the office of Otto Salvisberg before moving to the US where he began focusing on furniture design. Firstly known for his 'skyscraper furniture' in the 1920s he started to design for the Johnson Furniture Company from 1949 onwards. Characteristic for the designs Frankl developed for Johnson Company were, among others, the bleached-cork tables in different shapes and sizes.
