Clara Porset Lounge Chairs 'Butaque' in Original Patinated Leather
Attributed to Clara Porset, armchairs 'Butaque', patinated leather, cypress wood, Mexico, circa 1947
Wonderful ‘Butaque’ armchair attributed to Clara Porset. It features a strong resemblance to Porset’s lounge chair ‘Butaque’ without armrests. These two lounge chairs with strong frames in cypress wood contain a strongly yet elegant patinated leather seat and backrest. Within the set of two chairs the patina on the leather differs in intensity. Wonderful bold, dynamic lines characterize the grand chair with sculptural appearance. The butaque chair is originally an example of the mestizo culture in Mexico. It is a design that came from Mexico's Spanish conquerors and was adapted by local artisans to become a representation of Mexican nationalism. Porset was inspired by this work and reinvented the aesthetics in several designs.
Please note that the leather and the wooden frame both show strong patina.
